Last year sometime, just before I graduated college, I started writing a novel. A novel about ninjas. I focused more on character. The ninja part was just sort of a way to keep me writing when I got stuck; I don’t really know a lot about ninjas. Well, the thing is, I sort of finished it. Well, a version of it. I put it away for a while, then when it came time to edit, I sort of lost interest in the characters and its world. Basically, it sucked.
A few days ago, I came across a writing prompt on Reddit about ninjas. I wrote a short story for it. While the whole ninja part was sort of minor and didn’t really matter, I liked the characters and it had some good tension and I liked the energy I got from it. And now I want to write more of it and try to have a novel by maybe sometime next year. It might or might not end up being about ninjas, I don’t really know. For now, let’s just call it a comedy/action or comedy/thriller. Hell, I’ll figure that out at some point.
While I don’t consider the time I spent writing the old ninja novel a waste, I’m pretty much axing it completely and starting over with the newer energy from the new piece I wrote, using the first attempt as more of an experience to help me get through this new one.
I also realize that a big part of marketing a book these days is blogging about it, making sure people know you’re writing a book, making sure there are people who’ll read the damn thing when you’re done.
So, you know, plans and such. I’m writing a novel. Blah, blah, blah. I’m terrified to announce any type of update schedule, but I’ll try to check in with you guys on the progress of the book every week or so.
